Established in March 2020, Chickpea Breeding Australia is a joint program funded by GRDC and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). Collectively, we have invested $30 million into developing high-yielding Desi and Kabuli chickpea varieties to increase outputs in traditional and new growing areas. To put it simply, our program aims to boost chickpea grower profitability Australia-wide.
Using best practice breeding and industry-leading technologies, we strive to improve the rate of genetic gain for chickpeas. Our staff work with six national
seed partners to ensure our sustainable, adaptive varieties are available for regional farmers. We’ve also engaged one company to complete End Point Royalty collection on our behalf. Chickpea Breeding Australia will be approximately ten times its size upon completion in February 2025.

Chickpea Breeding Australia is a significant, long-term commitment for the NSW DPIRD and GRDC. Not only are we investing in the development of new chickpea varieties, but also infrastructure and human resources. Based in Tamworth NSW, Chickpea Breeding Australia has twelve direct employees which includes five new full time positions that were created while transitioning from the previous breeding program, Pulse Breeding Australia. We also subcontract ten organisations across Australia for field evaluation trials, biometrics support and applying genomic technologies.
